DIY Nightmare Before Christmas Sally Costume

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is one of my favorite events in the Magic Kingdom. I love dressing up and this year decided to create a DIY Sally costume that required absolutely no sewing.

I’ve only seen the Nightmare Before Christmas once. I enjoyed it but I never thought that I would dress up as Sally. My friend Hannah was visiting and had talked about being Jack so the idea for Sally just popped into my brain.

I started with a dress I found at a thrift shop for two dollars.

I used a small pair of sewing scissors to remove the rosettes from the collar.

After that I was left with a fitted dress with a v neck.

Next I headed out to grab felt squares, fabric, fabric marker, and glue sticks. You will need a glue gun.

Now it’s time to get started…

I took the white felt and cut it into a rectangle shape and placed it on a larger rectangle on the polka dot fabric. I then hot glued the felt to the fabric. For most of this project I hot glued the felt squares directly onto the dress. But because of the fabric being so thin and see-through I needed to bulk it up with the white felt underneath.

Using the shape of the dress as my guide I continued to hot glue squares on to the bodice of the dress.

Once I had the top in place I used my fabric marker to draw the spirals one the right side of Sally’s dress. Then I began to work on the bottom of the dress. That’s where I had the most fun.

Sally’s dress is made of patches so I let my imagination run wide creating all kinds of patches.

I added two criss cross x’s to the top to represent her stitches and my trusty fabric marker to draw on extra stitches.

Now it was time to find a wig. I found a very inexpensive one on Amazon.

Maybe I should have been a redhead….nah….;)

I never got a great photo of my makeup at the party so I borrowed this one from my Instagram. Here are the products I used.

Foundation /concealer / contour / eye shadow / paint pot / eye brows / liner / lip / blush / mascara / lashes / fix + / strobe cream

I’m really happy with the overall look of my costume. Don’t be afraid to hot glue your heart out right on top of your thrift shop treasure if y’all give this project a try.

I also had a few scraps of felt leftover to make Hannah @soarnarounddisney a Jack Skellington collar.

I cut a bat shape out of black felt. I hot glued white strips of felt on top of the bat shape and layered a black triangle on top for the bat face. I cut two small pieces of white felt for the eyes. I attached it to two strips of black felt so that Hannah could tie it around her neck.

We were having so much fun that night we never snapped a photo together. So I’m going to share a few pictures of the castle during the Not So Spooky Spectacular.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I like I said earlier I would have never picked Sally as a costume on my own but I loved the challenged and I’m thrilled with the way it turned out.

Hope that y’all have a magical Halloween.

Aloha & Xoxo,

Kate
